EMAILED ON March 9, 2022

NCAA College Basketball Betting Analysis for March 9th

3:00 p.m. ET: Stanford Cardinal (15-15) vs Arizona State Sun Devils (14-16)

Spread: ASU -4
Total: 128.5

The Arizona State Sun Devils will face the Stanford Cardinal in the opening round of the Pac-12 Tournament. These teams meet for the 3rd time this season. Stanford won the first meeting 79-76 and Arizona State won 65-56 in the last matchup on March 5. DJ Horne is shooting 38.9% and averaging 12.2 points for the Sun Devils and Ingram is averaging 10.5 points and 6.6 rebounds for the Cardinal. ASU has won its last 4 games with the most recent being the win against the Cardinal at home. The Arizona State defense has been tough all year, holding Pac-12 opponents to a league-low 39.1 percent shooting from the field and 29.3 percent from 3-point range. Stanford, which hasn’t won a Pac-12 tourney game since 2018, comes to Vegas having lost its last five games and seven of the last eight. The Cardinal have only scored more than 56 points once in their last 5 games. Turnovers have caused problems for Stanford all season, giving it away more than 15 times per game including 21 in the loss at Arizona State on Saturday. The Sun Devils come into the conference tournament as one of the hottest teams in the PAC-12 after winning 7 of their last 8 games and should be able to keep it going here.

4:30 p.m. ET: Butler Bulldogs (13-18) vs Xavier Musketeers (18-12)

Spread: Xavier -5.5
Total: 131

The Xavier Musketeers and Butler Bulldogs meet in the first round of the Big East Tournament. The Musketeers were 13-5 in home games and the Bulldogs went 6-14 in conference matchups. Xavier averages 73.7 points and has outscored opponents by 5.1 points per game. These teams square off for the 3rd time this season after Xavier won the last matchup 68-66 on Feb. 3. Zach Freemantle scored 23 to help lead Xavier to the victory, and Jayden Taylor scored 18 points for Butler. Xavier also won at Butler early in Jan. by a score of 72-87. Xavier had lost 5 straight and 7 of 8 games before finding its footing in Saturday’s regular-season finale with a 97-75 rout of woeful Georgetown. Butler has lost 5 straight games. Xavier swept Butler in the regular season last year, too, only to squander a 19-point first-half lead and lose in overtime in the first round of the Big East tourney. Xavier ranks 40th on offensive efficiency and is scoring 73.7 PPG. Xavier also has the 51st most efficient defense. Xavier has the advantage all around in this game and despite the last game appearing close Xavier handled the Bulldogs most of the game. Xavier will make the big tourney with a win here so look for the Muskateers to get the job done.

7:00 p.m. ET: Clemson Tigers (17-15) vs Virginia Tech Hokies (19-12)

Spread: Virginia Tech -3.5
Total: 131

The Clemson Tigers will try to extend its 5-game winning streak with a victory when they face the Virginia Tech Hokies in the 2nd round of the ACC tournament. These teams meet for the 2nd time this season after Clemson won 63-59 in the first matchup on March 5. PJ Hall led the Tigers with 12 points, and Nahiem Alleyne led the Hokies with 17 points. Clemson averages 71.6 PPG and Virginia Tech is averaging 69.6 PPG. Virginia Tech lost 7 of its first 9 conference games but has responded by winning 9 of 11 games since then to get back into the NCAA Tournament picture. Virginia Tech beats teams from beyond the arc where they rank 6th in the nation shooting the 3-ball at 38.8%. They only shot 30% from three in the first matchup against Clemson while the Tigers shot over 40% from deep. The Hokies defense is ranked 18th in the nation in points allowed, giving up just 61.3 PPG, including just 57.3 PPG over their last 8 games. Clemson got away with a big win on their home floor but the Hokies will be ready for revenge in this one after a bad outing. If Clemson doesn’t have a lights-out day from three-point range, the Hokies should cover easily.

7:00 p.m. ET: West Virginia Mountaineers (15-16) vs Kansas State Wildcats (14-16)

Spread: Kansas St. -1
Total: 138.5

The Kansas State Wildcats play in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament against the West Virginia Mountaineers. These teams meet for the 3rd time this season. West Virginia won 71-68 on Jan 8th and the Wildcats won 78-73 in the last matchup on Feb. 15. Nowell led the Wildcats with 21 points, and Taz Sherman led the Mountaineers with 23 points in that game. Nijel Pack is averaging 17.4 points for the Wildcats and Sherman is averaging 18.3 points for the Mountaineers.  The Mountaineers have lost 8 of the last 10 games while the Wildcats have lost 5 straight. The Wildcats have been hobbled recently, with leading scorer Nijel Pack bothered by a stomach bug in Saturday’s home finale against Oklahoma. Second-leading scorer Markquis Nowell missed the final two games with a hamstring injury. West Virginia has some momentum by ending their losing streak on Saturday and having their entire roster healthy coming into this game. If Nowell and Pack are not 100% then it will be a big blow for Kansas State. This game is a toss-up but West Virginia has the experience to get the job done in this spot.

9:30 p.m. ET: Louisville Cardinals (13-18) vs Virginia Cavaliers (18-12)

Spread: Virginia -5.5
Total: 124

Louisville faces the Virginia Cavaliers after Jarrod West scored 20 points in Louisville’s 84-74 win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the first round of the ACC tournament. It was just the second victory in 11 games since Mike Pegues became the interim coach for the Cardinals. These teams play each other for the 3rd time this season. Virginia won both meetings, 64-52 at home, and Virginia won the last meeting 71-61 on March 5 at Louisville. Jayden Gardner is scoring 15.2 points per game and averaging 6.9 rebounds for the Cavaliers. Noah Locke is scoring 9.7 points per game with 2.4 rebounds and 0.9 assists for the Cardinals. The Cavaliers should be well-rested since this is their only game since Feb. 26th.  Virginia leads the series with Louisville 19-5, winning 13 of the last 14 meetings. The Cardinals defense is giving up 77.2 points in their previous 5 games while the Cavaliers are allowing 63.3 points in their last 3 games. Louisville had a great offensive performance against Georgia Tech while the Yellow Jackets offense was ice cold. Virginia’s focus is always on defense first so the Cardinals will not be able to score as easily. Virginia needs a few wins to have any chance of making the tournament so they should be ready to roll today. The favorite is 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
