The Braves suddenly have a lot to play for as they’re within reach of first place in the NL East. These teams might have similar records, but one of them has much more of a chance at making the playoffs. Atlanta is now just 2.5 games back of New York after the Mets lost another game on Tuesday. In JA Happ’s last start for the Twins and it was so bad they traded him. He allowed 9 runs on 10 hits with 4 walks in just 3 innings in a 17-14 loss to the Tigers. The Braves are 4th in the majors in home runs and 6th in slugging percentage. The Braves have done well in St. Louis, going 7-2 in the last 9 meetings in St. Louis. One of Smyly’s best starts of the season was against the Cardinals back on June 20 when he tossed 5.2 scoreless innings. The Braves have gone 8-1 in Smyly’s last nine starts.
